Recently I've been composing for a video series on YouTube, entitled Elite: Dangerous - DarkenSpace. It is affording me the opportunity to exercise my orchestral and other instrumental chops at the same time that I continue to concentrate on acoustic guitar as the primary focus of my next solo album. Full episodes of DarkenSpace are expected to begin appearing sometime in late September, but you can watch the preview of DarkenSpace and hear what I've been up to, right here and now:

Embedding, et cetera

July 6th, 2014

I've added an embedded player for music from the album to the front page of the site. Outside of that, I'm currently taking a bit of a break from the studio to catch my breath and take care of some other things before I begin contemplating a new round of composition.

I've also been getting very positive feedback on the mixing and mastering I did on the album, for which I am very grateful.

I do have a few other things in the works related to publicizing Deep Waters. If and when those things bear any fruit, I'll pass it along here. Fingers crossed!

SoundCloud update

As promised, two full songs from Deep Waters and a montage track of snippets from the entire album have now been uploaded to my SoundCloud account. BandCamp will continue to be the "go-to" place for the entirety of the album, but I know SoundCloud has a lot of users, too.

I appreciate the kind comments I have gotten thus far on the music! Thank you very much.

Album released!

My album Deep Waters is now available at I'm running a little late on getting a few of the songs onto SoundCloud, but that will happen very soon ... likely in the next day or so.

Mixing is about to begin …

It's been a long slog through many months of trying to find time to finish my recording sessions, but the finish line is only days away now, at last. More or less complete versions of all twelve songs from the album are on my laptop now. I just have a night or two of touch-ups and overdubs to do, and then I'll be transitioning wholly into the role of mixing engineer for the next several weeks. Or at least that's my plan, as this will be the first time I've completely separated my recording and mixing efforts, so I could be surprised by what I'll find myself doing once I am fixated solely on the mix process.

Sometime in the next week or two I'm also going to start redesigning the appearance of this website to match the album artwork. When you see the look of this site change, you'll also know that the album is about to drop, or has dropped already.

The Spring

I have over half of my forthcoming album as test mixes on my laptop at this point, having bumped several of the earlier recorded songs off of the album in favor of some that I've done in these last couple of months. I also have all but two of the remaining songs (either 11 or 12 in total, depending upon how you count them) nearly ready for mixing, and have a week set aside for knocking out the final recordings later this month. I also have designed the cover graphic for the album, and I'm getting a kick out of seeing it in my iTunes library (haha).

It won't be much longer now - I'm very much looking forward to sharing what I've spent nearly every free minute of my time lately creating.

Making Progress

January 31st, 2014

During the last month my recording efforts have been proceeding at a good pace. I have about half a dozen songs "in the can" and ready for mixdown at this point, with several more underway. I do find myself doing the Garbage studio thing of going back and endlessly tweaking the songs I already have, but eventually I'm going to have to force myself to put a period on them and proceed to the mixing and mastering stages.

At the moment I am leaning toward just releasing this set of songs on SoundCloud, at least initially, in order to get them out there and gauge if there is any interest in them. I'll probably not have decided for certain until I'm well into the mastering process, though.

Barring any new life complications, right now a late spring or early summer release is looking like the best bet. Keeping my nose to the grindstone and my fingers crossed!

My Inner Zimmer

Last month I came across a nice original song from YouTuber/blogger/author/musician Andrea Heckler, called Lady of Rohan (Éowyn's Song), in which she sings, plays violin and guitar. I liked the emotional potency of her song, and the way she repurposed a small portion of the iconic Rohan violin theme from the LotR movies into a different key and progression. But since her recording capabilities were limited, the song's arrangement was quite sparse throughout and I really wanted to hear an orchestra come in to back her up part of the way through. (I also had a brand new orchestral sample library at my disposal, and welcomed the opportunity to familiarize myself with it.) So I contacted her, and she kindly agreed to let me try my hand at adding some orchestration to the song.

Since the original's individual tracks were not accessible, I started with the monophonic audio track extracted from the video itself, which limited the adjustments I could make to the original mix. Still, after an enjoyable weekend of indulging my inner Zimmer, I had come up with an orchestral score that I hope adds some nice drama, and Ms. Heckler has been very generous about the results as well (as can be seen from her comments in her Tumblr blog).

For much of 2013 I have been occupied with upgrading my recording facilities. With most of those efforts now behind me (at least for the time being), I have finally begun working in earnest on my first album of original instrumental music, which will include both the best of my older compositions (re-recorded to capitalize on the improved studio technology to which I now have access) as well as brand new material, mixing elements of new age, folk, rock, Celtic and classical music.
